We, the first year high school students of the Integrated Developmental School are conducting a project, the “No to Plastic Use” campaign.

     We observe that in our surroundings, there are many plastics such as cups, bottles, bags and wrappers. We know that the effects of plastics in our environment are really disastrous because these have harmful components such as phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA) and tetrabromobispherol. These chemicals can escape the plastic and be absorbed by foods and drinks. When we ingest these chemicals, they can cause harm to the brain, the reproductive system and more. Also, plastics contain polysterene which contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer in an indefinite period of time; it takes hundreds of years for an average plastic bag to decay. It means then, with the presence of a plastic trash/waste in the drainage system, on the streets, along the bay and floating on the sea, rivers, and creeks, and scattered everywhere these can contribute largely to the clogging of rainwater passages that would eventually cause flooding like what we have experienced during that fateful night of December 17, 2011 when Typhoon Sendong unleashed its wrath on the people. It was a horrendous experience no one would desire to be repeated.



Therefore, the purpose of this project is to limit if not totally eliminate the usage of plastic. It might be a simple project but we believe it can make a big difference in preserving Mother Nature.
